Today and yesterday I’ve been super lazy. I should’ve gone into work both days, but I didn’t. Yesterday I did buy some cds at the local used store across from campus. Everytime I go in there, I see about 20 CDs I want. They’re all priced around 8 bucks which isn’t too bad.
Summary of the 5 CDs:
Bob Marley – Natty Dread – I got this since I had jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter’s version of this album and I liked it. Much to my surprise the versions of Lively Up Yourself and No Woman No Cry were totally different than versions I’d heard before. I think I’ve heard about 4 diff versions of Lively Up Yourself, but they’re all damn good.
Miles Davis – Ballads – I got this because someone recommended it to me a while back. Really good stuff. Definitely some of his more laid back jazz, somewhat akin to Kind of Blue-just for comparison purposes.
Freddy King – All His Hits – Is it Freddie or Freddy? Anyway this CD is great, it has Hideaway, which I’ve been learning on the guitar, and See See Baby. One of my first impressions of the CD is that Eric Clapton must be a Freddie King wannabe. He definitely took a lot from Freddie’s stylings both guitar wise and vocally.
Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On/Let’s Get it On – 2 classic albums on one CD. The contrast between the 2 albums is very apparent from the social awareness and spirituality of What’s Going On to the sensual Let’s Get it On. I am impressed by both. It’s a shame that his preacher dad shot him to death.
Cream – The Very Best of Cream – I broke my other Cream greatest hits CD a couple years ago so I decided to pick this one up. This compilation has more songs, many of which I’ve never heard.
Also yesterday I went to Harry’s Guitar Shop and messed around with some Taylor acoustics and a very nice Fender Strat ‘62 Reissue, ya know with the 3 way selectors, I noticed you could put the selector between the 3 default positions to achieve that out of phase tone that the 5 way selector Strats have. I want a ‘62 really bad. I did pick up The Allman Brothers Definitive Collection Tab Book Vol 1 out of the 3 vol series. This is the starting point of me learning how to REALLY play slide guitar. My goal is to play Duane Allman like slide. I really want to focus on slide since so few people have command on the instrument. This vol contains songs from A-H, so I’ll be working on everything Ain’t Wasting Time No More and the Dickey Betts licks of Blue Sky to Gambler’s Roll and Don’t Keep Me Wondering. It’s documented now:I shall go out and get good at the slide!
